Ray Mirra is a well-known American professional sports writer. He is the Managing Editor of Sporting News. Most of his work has been written about professional American football. However, Ray Mirra covered professional and even college sports for many years. As such, he has some interesting insights about the different kinds of sports people follow.
As a former pro-football player, Ray Mirra gives out valuable insights into the life of professional athletes. This includes information on which sports are the most popular, as well as why they are so popular. He also touches on how popular specific sports teams are. For instance, a sports writer may cover the NFL, but Ray will go over the intriguing statistics of an NHL team or an NCAA team that has recently won its first national championship.
The last time I was in Philadelphia, I made a quick trip to Flyers Country to see some of the local college teams practice. As a result, I had Ray Mirra's number in my phone ring every time I had to look up some stats. As it turns out, this is not the only reason Ray Mirra Sports schooling in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a large hub for professional sportswomen. Therefore, if you are in sports reporting, you have likely met Ray before.
Besides sports writing, Ray has had a successful sports writing career as a teacher. As such, he brings with him the experience of having helped many students throughout their early life. This is especially helpful since he was able to teach all of those students about success, determination, persistence, and hard work.
College As a Football
One of the sports writers who benefited from Ray's teaching techniques was Vince Carter, who is currently a professional wrestler. Before being introduced into the WWE by its founding father, Vince, he spent four years at college as a football and basketball player at Penn State University. During that time, he also became a respected college sports writer.
It is likely that the best sports stories that will be told about the city of Philadelphia will be related to sports. Therefore, as a former sports writer for the Inquirer, I was thrilled to hear about Mr. Ray Mirra. His success as a sports writer is a great example of how one can succeed in the business.
If you want to get a job in sports reporting, you have to know how to write about it in a way that it relates to being a sports writer in Philadelphia. You have to know the Philadelphia Eagles, their players, their history, and their on field battles. You have to know the city and the culture and the people in Philadelphia. This is why my friends and I used to get together for a couple of hours every Monday to discuss our favorite sports stories that we had heard and read in the newspaper.
Mr. Ray Mirra was a huge help to me and many other college sports writers when he coached the Nittany Lions to victory in the 2021 national championship. Raymond Mirra was able to bring a new exciting element to the press box that the rest of the sports reporters were not using before. He instilled a love for the Nittany Lions program and his voice. It is a shame that all of this was cut short because of the war.
Sports Reporting
I was able to continue to do sports reporting as a college student but not as a sports writer. I worked for the university as an athletic information director. It was a great job and allowed me to meet and work with some of the world class people that are involved with the university's athletics. However, I would not call myself a sport writer. The truth is that I am an entertainer and I like to report news, but I am not one to pass it on to anyone else.
Ray Mirra had the vision to teach me that the journey will always be present until you have finished your college football playing days. As a child I watched him and his father coach of the Nittany Lions to victory on national TV. I learned so much from watching them grow and mature into successful coaches. He was able to move from the small college system to the big time as an NFL head coach. He is one of the few coaches to have done all of it in Philadelphia. This has influenced my decision to become a sports writer and pursue sports reporting as a career.
Do not let your early life influence your decision to become a sports writer. There are many other avenues and niches that you can explore if you want to become a successful sports writer. You can go to college and become a coach or use the contacts and guidance I provided you with to become a sports writer and teacher.
